This is a brief description of the classes and what you will be learning at the retreat!
7 years ago I started Embroidery Garden. I specialize in creating original and unique in the hoop designs for machine embroidery. I’m a national independent educator traveling across the country teaching my designs at various stores and venues. I’ve authored several magazine articles and recently had a book, “Embroidery Garden’s MDC Projects” published by Brother International. I’ve developed innovative techniques and ideas that reflect in my designs and teaching. I truly enjoy what I do.

Stephanie is a Licensed Silhouette Instructor and teaches ScanNCut and everything vinyl at MidSouth Crafting Supplies and MidSouth Sewing Center and provides crafting weekend retreats. Stephanie loves all things vinyl and loves teaching others about it even more.
The Brother ScanNCut is a very versatile and fun machine! Learn how this valuable tool allows you to cut everything from Appliqués to Heat Transfer Vinyl. In this 1 hr. class we will discuss how to use the ScanNCut and online Canvas Workspace and what makes the ScanNCut special. After applying Hotfix Adhesive you are ready to cut your design using any home cutter. Once your designs are cut simply peel off the backing and iron it on to your project. Cindy will highlight the interactive functions of the programs with the Brother ScanNCut machine. BES 4 has tons of built in applique’s, but you can also create your own from FCM files and SVG files if you have the Power Pack add-on. You will be amazed at how easy this can be done. PE-DESIGN can create appliques easily from FCM files. This is an informative session that you don’t want to miss.

Using those BIG hoops for BIG projects is a fun class showing best practices to use embroidery machines’ BIG hoops to create dramatic Applique and Embroidery projects. Leashes, Socks, Mittens, Collar Corners, Pockets, and More – They are all hard to hoop but they can all be done easily without specialized tools. In this class you will be learning how to make an IN THE HOOP bag tag. In the first part of the class, Melissa will teach all the techniques needed for this project. Then, you will move into the Hands on portion. The price of the class includes the material as well as the digitized design used to create the bag tag. We will provide 4 machines at the front of the room, that you will be able to take turns to create your tag. You are also welcome to bring YOUR machine. We will have tables with power so you will be able to plug in and go. For those of you who would like to attend the class but not participate in the hands on portion, you can take the material home and create it there.

Applique designs are perfect for decorating wearables and quilts. Change the fabric and thread, and you have a “brand-new” design. But they can be so much more. All my free-standing and 3D designs began with a regular applique design. We’ll discuss edits that might be needed and materials that can be used to turn your static applique designs into works of art that can literally stand on their own. We all love to make MONEY! In this class you will learn some quick projects that you can crank out and use to increase your profit margin!
SVG files are a versatile vector-based art format that are used by embroidery digitizers and graphic designers. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to make your own original vector-based art (in SVG format) as well as edit existing files. We’ll be locating and installing new fonts, covering common editing techniques, and experimenting with brushes, lines, and shapes to produce different looks. Don’t think you have the right software? Have no fear – we will be using freely available programs.
What is a serger, how is it used, and what can you do with it? All of these questions will be answered in this class. This will be a very fun and informative class about all things sergers!
Don’t let the tech side of embroidery scare you! In this workshop, I’ll teach you how to locate, extract and transfer files on both a MAC and a PC. We’ll also discuss common file formats and how they are used. Finally, I’ll share tips and tricks for file organization, backup and making your workflow smoother.

Having the correct hardware can make or break a project. In this class we will discuss different types of hardware, when to use it, and tips for installation. Learn to use the correct hardware every time!
Learn how to design and print custom apparel. All you need is a heat press. We will explore several different transfer offerings, show how they can be made, and offer application tips!
How to digitize lettering – In this class we will delve into the tools and process followed to create designs that happen to look like letters – focusing on those created with the satin turning angle column style of embroidery. Satin stitches are the strongest stitches that can cause the most movement when stitched – in embroidery “bad words” think puckering, pulling, clumping and muddy looking stitches. So, we will discuss the planning as well as the digitizing tools and their implementation in order to get the results we are looking for.

Creating layered applique with a silicone mat.
Cutting pre-fused fabric on home cutters.
How to print and/or draw patterns onto paper backing of Hotfix Adhesive.

The contest will be judged by the attendees in attendance. We will have a meet and greet following the vendor panel. This will be a great night of fun and networking among like minded people.

The class is all about the initial foundation of theory John learned from his Schiffli mentor more than 33 years ago, and will contain the most important information you’ll ever learn about digitizing. If you’ve ever been to a hands-on software class before you might be skeptical, since often the person who knows the least get the most attention during class, while others are left waiting. Not this time! Two weeks prior to class attendees will download a demo version of the software and some basic tutorials about the tools needed for class. Because everyone will come prepared, laptop loaded with the demo software and knowing where the tools are, you’ll be ready for accelerated learning!
